Campaign Goals
Interpretation
Promise Land offers educational programs, museum tours, and events specific to the Promise Land Community and the African American cultural experience in general; all of which takes place on the original land of the Community, where historical antiques and relics help tell the story. Specific tools are needed to maintain revitalization and collection care efforts properly and sustainably for artifacts in the School Museum to ensure that the Promise Land history continues to be told for future generations.
Preservation
Interior finishes are needed to continue to restore and maintain the Historic Promise Land Church building as a cultural arts and performance venue. Restoration and weatherization of the School Museum and remaining outhouse are needed. The significance of historic preservation is not just about bricks and mortar. It is about our values. The Promise Land Historic Site provides a sense of place with identity, and a connection to previous generations that is irreplaceable.
Leadership
Promise Land has been sustained by volunteerism. To take interpretation, preservation, and impact to the next level, the employment of a goal-oriented Executive Director is crucial. Leadership for administration, fundraising, marketing, strategizing, programming, and management is needed to ensure that the Promise Land Heritage Association and the Promise Land Historic site have a strong cultural and historic presence for years to come.
Two Ways To Give
History and Values
Promise Land was settled by formerly enslaved people and veterans of the United States Colored Troops of the Union Army after the Civil War during the Reconstruction Period between 1870 - 1875. Belief in the living spirit of history, the power of untold stories, and the significance of everyday objects and intangible characteristics are the touchstones of the Promise Land School Museum and the Promise Land Historic Site.
